Why do you call yourself Marketing and Communications now, instead of just Communications?

Summary

The reason why Communications moved into a Marketing/Communications role in the Library.

Body

In 2018, SLCPL hired a consultant to conduct a feasibility study regarding the system’s development and growth. A major theme emerged: while the Salt Lake community has favorable opinions regarding Salt Lake City Public Library as a system, there is an opportunity to increase awareness of happenings at the Library and to update library nostalgia. We’ve all probably heard the phrase, “I didn’t know the Library offered/had/did that!” With that understanding, a shift needed to be made in the department, rather than focusing solely on promoting events, programs, and ideas to patrons already coming into the Library buildings, we needed to turn outward. The position of Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications was created with the intention of taking on more of a traditional marketing approach. This position was created to replace the existing Manager of Communications’ role and functions.
